- “Test-of-cure” follow-up testing is not recommended for Trichomonas unless symptoms persist.
- The CDC recommends that women (not men) diagnosed with Trichomonas be retested three months after treatment.
Because of the high rate of reinfection among women treated for trichomoniasis, retesting is recommended approximately 3 months after initial treatment for all sexually active women.
Treatment reduces symptoms and signs of trichomoniasis and might reduce transmission. Healthcare providers should advise people with trichomoniasis to not have sex again until they and their sex partners are treated (when therapy has been completed and any symptoms have resolved).
The recommended first-line treatment for trichomoniasis is metronidazole.
